BIS Is a form for the Bureau of Indian Standard, which is a national standard body of India constituted under the BIS act 2016. It was established for the harmonious development of standardization, marking, and quality certification of goods and for incidental or connected matter. BIS provides traceable and tangible benefits to the national economy by providing safe and reliable quality goods, decreasing health hazards to consumers, promoting import and export substitutes, controlling the proliferation of varieties, etc. through standardization, certification and testing.
The BIS is a national standards body promoting and regulating standards of products and goods in India. The BIS has set up eight Central, four regional, and three branch laboratories in India to test the samples of the products during the preliminary and surveillance operations. BIS also operates a Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) for Electronics and Information Technology Goods for the product categories notified by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This scheme was introduced in 2012 by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to safeguard Indian consumers from spurious and substandard goods.
According to Compulsory Registration Scheme Orders, no one shall manufacture or store for sale, sell, import, or distribute goods that do not conform with the Indian standards specified in the order and do not bear the Standard Mark with a unique registration number obtained from BIS.
BIS Certification for Electronics and IT Products comes under BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (BIS CRS) / BIS Registration Scheme. Before releasing electronic and information technology items to the market, BIS registration is essential. BIS grants manufacturers a license to use or apply the Standard Mark with a unique R-number on electronics and IT goods. BIS Registration is based on your self-declaration of conformity for goods and articles as per Indian Standards.
Obtaining BIS registration for Electronics and IT products included in the Compulsory Registration Scheme is a prerequisite before introducing them to the market. All manufacturers of electronic products are required to obtain BIS registration in order to utilize the BIS Standard Mark along with an R-number.
The BIS Certificate is valid for 2 years and then it can be renewed if there is no change in the concerned products & mentioned standards. The renewed BIS Certificate will be valid for 1 year and a maximum of 5 years.
Fill up the required necessary papers. An AIR, i.e. Authorized Indian Representative, will be appointed via the standard nomination form.
BIS registration Certification is usually granted to Manufacturing Units. However , Traders and importers of eligible products can also secure this certification in the name of their respective Manufacturing Units.
This certification provided by BIS guarantees safety, quality, and reliability of products. The certification guarantees that products conform as per the Indian standards (IS).
The BIS mark is compulsory for several types of IT and electrical items, Including TV, keyboard, batteries, etc. In contrast, the ISI mark is mandatory for items like food products, cements, steel material etc. The ISI mark also encompasses various voluntary BIS certification product categories.
Common necessary papers required for securing BIS registration including a Business certificate, tax certificate, list of machinery and products, AIR nomination form (in case of the foreign manufacturer etc.)
