As per rules and legislation underlined by the Indian Parliament, various certifications or product authorization procedures are followed in India and end number of agencies have been legally approved to regulate these certifications methodologies. Many such product authentication marks are given to companies engaged in the manufacturing business before such companies release their developed products in the market. Various certifications are also given as advisory status.
The Bureau of Indian Standards is the the standard organization in India having the authority for providing such certifications of industrial products and various industrial standardization marks. There are also other agencies like Department of Telecommunications (operating under the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology) that gives accreditation to wireless & telecommunication products.

Domestic Manufacturers Certification Scheme- Those applying for a BIS license can select any of the following application procedures:
Normal Procedure- Duly filled in application form needs to be appended with relevant documents and the stated application fee. The manufacturing unit desirous of obtaining the BIS license should furnish all these documents to the registered branch office. The branch office should be of its own jurisdiction only. Once the registration is done, a BIS personnel will be assigned for conducting the relevant verification procedures of the production unit. Only those units that align operations with norms of Indian Standard are considered as worthy of evaluation. Factors further accessed includes the technical competency of professionals working in that manufacturing organization and the product testing infrastructure of the manufacturing unit. Independent checking as well as on site product sample testing and evaluations are done as a part of the process. Only after the product sample pass validated tests, the product quality are found to be in accordance with the specified standard of BIS, if the unit applying for the license concurs to enforce necessary testing or checking procedure and submits the fee, the BIS license is given within four to six months post the registration process, depending on whether the product is licensed to be sold all across India.
Simplified Procedure- Under this simplified procedure, the candidate applying for the license has to register testing documents that are duly registered by designated labs. These testing docs needs to be appended along with the application form. License is granted if the authorized BIS personnel evaluating the applicant are satisfied with the onsite scrutinizing procedure, and the unit applying for the license accepts to impose required checking & testing procedures and duly makes payment of the imposed license fee. Independent sample testing though considered important during onsite checking procedure of BIS, yet the testing might not be a prerequisite before the BIS license is granted. Test reports might later be evaluated and accessed as a part of the review procedure.
Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme- Manufacturers or applicants residing outside Indian soil are provided license for ISI authorization as per different scheme. The license is provided within a span of six months.
